As most of us know, the Bar Mitzvah is a coming of age ritual for Jewish males, but it isn't often that we encounter a thirteen year old who strikes one in the least as being an adult. ( A lot of actual adults don't seem very adult, for that matter!) So I was impressed and surprised when I met Zach, and found a young man who was quietly confident, thoughtful and considerate of others, even in the midst of a party in his honor (with DJs, dancers and large lit signs emblazoned with "ZACH"). It was an occassion that could turn the best of us into a Kardashian, but it did not go to Zach's head in the least.
We started the photography for Zach's family the day before the party, taking family portraits in the sanctuary at Congregation Beth El in Bethesda. The party was the next day at Lakewood Country Club, where I arrived to see amazing sports-themed decorations by Dana Nestel of The Write Occassion. At the beginning of the event, the adults had a cocktail party while Zach and his friends played games led by the entertainers and DJ in the main room. Later everyone came together for a non-stop series of fun events including speeches, a candle lighting ceremony and energetic dancing. By the end of the night, a few of the younger kids couldn't take anymore and conked out on the couches (check out the last image in the series below).
