The philosophy behind my child photography is simple: Just let them be themselves. Kids don't fake smiles any better than adults do, so why bother trying? Instead, I photograph what they give me naturally, which is often a beautiful serene expression. Later when they get more comfortable with me and start having fun at the shoot, the natural smiles will come out on their own.
When the weather permits, I often photograph at parks around Baltimore like Sherwood Gardens or the Cylburn Arboretum. These are beautiful places with countless different backgrounds and where there is ample room for the kids to run. Yes -- when the kids show up at the shoot with lots of energy, I say cut them loose like a pack of wild animals! The picture above of the little girl barreling through the tulips is an example of this. That's no fake smile!
