Potential clients often ask me if I have photographed at the venue where they plan to hold their wedding ceremony or reception. While most venues do not present a great challenge to the experienced photojournalist, a few spaces in the area do appear to have been designed by evil architects out to make a photographer's life difficult. (I don't want to name names, but one of the toughest is right here in Baltimore and is full of books.)
For the most part, a space is difficult because it is dark and hard to light artificially. This is usually because of a lack of good surfaces to bounce your flash off of and/or nowhere to plug your flash in and/or no place to put your flash. That said, I thrive on lighting challenges and have tackled some big ones in my years as a photographer, lighting everything from a soccer stadium to a lonely tent in the mountains of Colombia.
